Teaching

I teach screenwriting and creative writing. I want writers to make room for their own obsessions, recurring images and questions they feel a little embarrassed to ask. These are often the beginnings of a story, before we even know who might like it.

In courses and workshops, I start with students’ projects. We look for the question that keeps them moving, get to know characters through what they want and what they do, and work on motivations, actions and narrative structure. Technique helps us find a form for what we want to tell, even when it is still confused or seems strange.

Part of the work is learning to recognise when we are writing to please an imaginary reader, and when a sentence, a scene or a character is taking us somewhere. I hope our conversations help writers follow that curiosity and hold on to the pleasure of writing, even through the hard work of revision.

My teaching experience includes Scuola Holden, Escuela de Escritores in Madrid, DAM Academy and Accademia del Cinema Toscana. I also work as a mentor and story editor, supporting the development and revision of novels and screenplays.
